Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (16 oz) hot roll mix
- 1 1/4 cups hot water
- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 1 1/4 pounds spicy Italian sausage
- 3/4 cup pizza sauce, plus more for dipping
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 mozzarella stick, optional
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare the hot roll mix according to the package directions using hot water and canola oil. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
- In a skillet, cook the spicy Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a 6-inch circle on a lightly floured surface.
- Spread a spoonful of pizza sauce on one half of each circle, leaving the edge clean. Add sausage, mozzarella cheese, and a small piece of mozzarella stick if using.
- Fold over, seal the edges tightly with a fork, and place on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden brown.
- Mix melted butter and minced garlic, brush over the hot calzones, and sprinkle with grated Parmesan.
- Serve warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use a fork or your fingers to tightly crimp the edges for a good seal.
- Don’t overfill, or the sauce may leak out during baking.
- Let the calzones rest for 5 minutes before cutting to keep the cheese inside.
