Description

These Touchdown Calzones are the ultimate game day food, packed with spicy sausage, melty mozzarella, and pizza sauce, all wrapped in a golden, buttery crust. Perfectly handheld and full of flavor, they’re a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (16 oz) hot roll mix
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 1/4 pounds spicy Italian sausage
  • 3/4 cup pizza sauce, plus more for dipping
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 mozzarella stick, optional
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the hot roll mix according to the package directions using hot water and canola oil. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
  3. In a skillet, cook the spicy Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a 6-inch circle on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Spread a spoonful of pizza sauce on one half of each circle, leaving the edge clean. Add sausage, mozzarella cheese, and a small piece of mozzarella stick if using.
  6. Fold over, seal the edges tightly with a fork, and place on the baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Mix melted butter and minced garlic, brush over the hot calzones, and sprinkle with grated Parmesan.
  9. Serve warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Use a fork or your fingers to tightly crimp the edges for a good seal.
  • Don’t overfill, or the sauce may leak out during baking.
  • Let the calzones rest for 5 minutes before cutting to keep the cheese inside.
