Description

Sweet Bread Strata is a delicious baked casserole made with cubes of sweet bread, eggs, milk, and sugar, creating a custard-like texture. Often enjoyed as a breakfast or brunch dish, it’s a comforting and indulgent treat, especially when topped with fresh fruit or syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups cubed sweet bread (such as challah or brioche)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh berries (optional)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed sweet bread into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Gently press the bread into the liquid to make sure it absorbs the mixture.
  5. If desired, fold in fresh berries for added flavor and texture.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the strata is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
  • Feel free to add nuts, such as pecans or almonds, for extra texture.
  • This dish can be made ahead by assembling it the night before and refrigerating it overnight, then baking it the next morning.
