Description
Sweet Bread Strata is a delicious baked casserole made with cubes of sweet bread, eggs, milk, and sugar, creating a custard-like texture. Often enjoyed as a breakfast or brunch dish, it’s a comforting and indulgent treat, especially when topped with fresh fruit or syrup.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups cubed sweet bread (such as challah or brioche)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh berries (optional)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Place the cubed sweet bread into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Gently press the bread into the liquid to make sure it absorbs the mixture.
- If desired, fold in fresh berries for added flavor and texture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the strata is golden brown and the center is set.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
- Feel free to add nuts, such as pecans or almonds, for extra texture.
- This dish can be made ahead by assembling it the night before and refrigerating it overnight, then baking it the next morning.
