Description

Sticky Char Siu Chicken is a sweet, savory, and glossy dish featuring juicy chicken thighs coated in a caramelized glaze of hoisin, honey, soy, and spices. Perfectly sticky, tender, and full of authentic Cantonese flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds boneless chicken thighs
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ½ teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with foil and a rack on top.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, five spice powder, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Add the chicken and toss to coat. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or overnight for deeper flavor.
  3. Arrange marinated chicken pieces on the rack, reserving any leftover marinade.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, pour the leftover marinade into a small pan and simmer over medium heat until thickened.
  5. Flip the chicken, brush with the thickened sauce, and bake for another 10–15 minutes until caramelized and slightly charred.
  6. Brush with extra sauce before serving for a glossy finish. Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions if desired.

Notes

  • For extra char, broil the chicken for 1–2 minutes at the end.
  • Marinate overnight for deeper, more authentic flavor.
  • Double the sauce recipe to use for drizzling or dipping.
  • Use a foil-lined pan for easier cleanup.
