Description

The South African Grilled Sandwich is a quick and flavorful sandwich featuring layers of cooked chicken or shredded beef, fresh vegetables, spicy peri-peri sauce, and melted cheese grilled to golden perfection. This sandwich offers a crispy texture and a bold, savory taste that is customizable and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Spreads

  • 4 slices sturdy white or whole-grain bread
  • Mayonnaise or peri-peri sauce, for spreading
  • Butter or olive oil, for grilling

Proteins

  • Cooked chicken or shredded beef, about 1 cup

Vegetables

  • Tomato slices, 4-6 slices
  • Onions, thinly sliced, 1 small
  • Bell peppers, thinly sliced, 1 small

Cheese & Seasonings

  • Cheddar or Gouda cheese, shredded or sliced, 1/2 cup
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional chili flakes or cayenne pepper, a pinch

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fillings: Cook and season your protein choice, either shredded beef or cooked chicken. Lightly sauté onions and peppers until caramelized to bring out their sweetness. Slice tomatoes and set all fillings aside for assembling.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread mayonnaise or peri-peri sauce evenly on one side of each bread slice. Layer the cooked meat, sautéed onions and peppers, and tomato slices on one bread slice. Add a generous layer of shredded cheese on top, then close the sandwich with the remaining bread slice.
  3. Grill to Perfection: Heat a pan or sandwich press over medium heat and brush with butter or olive oil. Place the sandwich on the grill, pressing down slightly. Grill each side for 3 to 5 minutes until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  4. Rest and Serve: Allow the sandwich to rest for one minute after grilling to let the fillings settle. Cut diagonally and serve warm for the best experience.

Notes

  • Use sturdy bread to prevent sogginess while grilling.
  • Place cheese closest to the bread for better melting and ingredient binding.
  • Grill on medium heat to crisp without burning the sandwich.
  • Let the sandwich rest before cutting to reduce filling spillage.
  • Try swapping mayonnaise with chutney or mustard for a unique flavor twist.
