Ingredients
Scale
- 14 slices French bread, sliced ½ inch thick
- 6 eggs
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 12.25 ounces caramel topping (1 jar)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and melted butter until smooth.
- Grease a 9×13 baking dish and pour caramel topping into the bottom, spreading evenly.
- Layer bread slices tightly over the caramel in the dish.
- Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to help absorb the custard.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Let the dish rest at room temperature for 10–15 minutes.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until golden and set.
- Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar before serving if desired.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for best texture and custard absorption.
- Customize with nuts, fruit, or chocolate chips before baking.
- Add a pinch of salt to the custard for balance.
