Description

Muffuletta is a classic Italian sandwich from New Orleans, featuring layers of salami, ham, mortadella, provolone cheese, and a tangy olive salad on a large round loaf of bread. It’s a delicious, hearty sandwich perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round loaf of Italian bread (about 10 inches in diameter)
  • 1/4 lb salami, sliced
  • 1/4 lb ham, sliced
  • 1/4 lb mortadella, sliced
  • 1/4 lb provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1/4 lb mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1/2 cup olive salad (or store-bought muffuletta olive salad)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread horizontally, leaving the top and bottom intact, forming a sandwich bun.
  2. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, salt, and pepper to make a dressing.
  3. Drizzle the dressing over the inside of both the top and bottom of the bread.
  4. Layer the salami, ham, mortadella, provolone, and mozzarella cheese evenly on the bottom half of the bread.
  5. Spread the olive salad on top of the cheeses, covering the entire surface.
  6. Top with the other half of the bread to close the sandwich.
  7. Press the sandwich down gently, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Slice into wedges and serve cold or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use a sturdy, round loaf of bread to hold all the ingredients.
  • Olive salad can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • For extra flavor, let the sandwich sit overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
