A traditional Greek meat pie layered with crisp, golden phyllo and filled with a savory mix of ground beef, rice, and herbs. Comforting, satisfying, and perfect for sharing.

- 500g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- ½ cup uncooked rice
- ½ cup tomato sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 10 phyllo sheets
- ½ cup melted butter or olive oil (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a skillet, sauté onion until soft. Add ground beef and cook until browned.
- Stir in uncooked rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2–3 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Layer 5 phyllo sheets in the baking dish, brushing each with melted butter or oil.
- Spread the meat mixture evenly over the layered phyllo.
- Top with remaining 5 phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter or oil. Trim or tuck the edges as needed.
- Score the top lightly into square portions.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and crisp. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- Keep phyllo dough covered with a damp towel while working.
- Cool filling before layering to avoid sogginess.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the meat.
