Description

These crispy golden Hush Puppies are light, fluffy, and perfectly seasoned with a hint of onion and spice. The ultimate Southern side dish that pairs beautifully with fried fish, barbecue, or enjoyed on their own.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cajun or Creole seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons grated onion
  • Oil for frying (canola, vegetable, or peanut)


Instructions

  1. Heat frying oil in a deep pot to 350°F. Line a plate with paper towels for draining.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, Cajun seasoning, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk milk, vinegar, vegetable oil, egg, and grated onion.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients, stirring gently until just mixed. Do not overmix.
  5. Using a small scoop or spoon, drop batter into the hot oil, a few at a time, to avoid crowding.
  6. Fry 2–3 minutes or until golden brown, turning as needed.
  7. Remove hush puppies and drain on paper towels or a wire rack.
  8. Serve warm with dipping sauce of choice.

Notes

  • Keep oil at a consistent 350°F for even frying.
  • Use a small scoop to ensure uniform size and even cooking.
  • If the batter thickens while sitting, add a tablespoon of milk to loosen it.
