Description

Glazed Old Fashioned Donuts are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a sweet, sugary glaze coating. These classic donuts have a slightly tangy flavor from buttermilk and are perfect for a breakfast treat or an afternoon snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  2. In another bowl, mix together buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Stir gently until just combined into a dough. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters to cut out the donuts.
  5. Heat the oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry the donuts, a few at a time, for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  6. To make the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
  7. Dip each warm donut into the glaze, coating it generously, then allow the excess glaze to drip off before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of ground allspice or cardamom to the dough.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute it with regular milk and a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar.
  • These donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
