Description

Soft and fluffy garlic bread baked in a loaf pan and topped with golden melted fontina cheese. This savory loaf is rich, aromatic, and perfect for serving alongside soups, pasta, or enjoying warm with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 1/2 cups fontina cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl dissolve the granulated sugar in the warm water and sprinkle the active dry yeast on top. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the olive oil, then gradually add the all purpose flour and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough gently, shape into a loaf, and place it into a lightly greased loaf pan.
  6. Sprinkle the minced garlic and shredded fontina cheese evenly over the top of the loaf.
  7. Let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is melted and lightly crisp.
  9. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use warm water, not hot, to avoid damaging the yeast.
  • For extra flavor add chopped fresh herbs to the dough.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze sliced portions for longer storage.
