Description

Fried Cabbage is a simple yet flavorful Southern-style side dish made by sautéing tender cabbage with onions, garlic, and seasonings. Perfect alongside fried chicken, pork chops, or any comfort food meal.

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, cored and chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, diced (optional for extra flavor)
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. If using bacon, cook in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving drippings in the pan.
  2. Add butter to the skillet (along with bacon drippings if using) and melt over medium heat.
  3. Stir in onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet and stir to combine with onions and garlic.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes if desired.
  7. Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
  8. Return bacon to the pan, stir well, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit bacon and use extra butter or olive oil.
  • Adding a splash of apple cider vinegar at the end brightens the flavor.
  • This dish reheats well and can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
