Description
Fried Cabbage is a simple yet flavorful Southern-style side dish made by sautéing tender cabbage with onions, garlic, and seasonings. Perfect alongside fried chicken, pork chops, or any comfort food meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium head green cabbage, cored and chopped
- 4 slices bacon, diced (optional for extra flavor)
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
Instructions
- If using bacon, cook in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving drippings in the pan.
- Add butter to the skillet (along with bacon drippings if using) and melt over medium heat.
- Stir in onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add chopped cabbage to the skillet and stir to combine with onions and garlic.
- Season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes if desired.
- Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
- Return bacon to the pan, stir well, and serve hot.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, omit bacon and use extra butter or olive oil.
- Adding a splash of apple cider vinegar at the end brightens the flavor.
- This dish reheats well and can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
