Description

Flat Bread with Cheesy Beef is a warm and satisfying savory bake made with a soft homemade flat bread base, seasoned ground beef, and a generous layer of melted mozzarella and cheddar. It is easy enough for a weeknight and hearty enough to serve for dinner, lunch, or a casual gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for brushing
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet or pizza pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it with olive oil.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  3. Stir in the Greek yogurt and 1 tablespoon olive oil until a soft dough forms.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  5. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a small drizzle of olive oil, then cook the chopped onion for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  6. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  7. Stir in the garlic, paprika, cumin, black pepper, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and tomato paste. Cook for 2 more minutes until fragrant and well combined.
  8. Roll or press the dough into a rough oval or rectangle about 1/4 inch thick on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the surface, leaving a small border around the edges.
  10. Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar evenly over the top.
  11. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the flat bread is cooked through, the edges are lightly golden, and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  12. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 3 to 5 minutes.
  13. Brush the edges lightly with olive oil if desired, then scatter chopped parsley over the top.
  14. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease from the beef if needed so the topping does not become heavy.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Do not overload the flat bread with topping or it may turn soggy in the center.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or a skillet for the best texture.
