- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup (60g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (200g) brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups (360ml) boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch baking dish or casserole dish.
- In a medium bowl, mix together granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined.
- Slowly add flour, stirring until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and cocoa powder together, then sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.
- Carefully pour boiling water over the top of the mixture (do not stir).
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the top is set and the filling is bubbly and gooey. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- For an extra treat, add chocolate chips to the batter before baking.
- This dessert is best served warm, as the gooey chocolate filling is a highlight.
