Description
Chicken Shawarma with Yogurt Sauce is a Middle Eastern-inspired dish featuring tender, spiced chicken slices wrapped in warm pita and drizzled with a tangy garlic yogurt sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- 3 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 2 teaspoons ground paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4–6 pita breads
- 1 cup shredded lettuce (optional)
- 1 tomato, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, paprika, turmeric, coriander, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
- Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, coat well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best flavor.
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken for 5-7 minutes per side, or until fully cooked and slightly charred.
- Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly.
- To prepare the yogurt sauce, mix 1 cup plain yogurt with 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 clove minced garlic, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl.
- Warm the pita breads and fill each with sliced chicken, lettuce, tomato, and a generous drizzle of yogurt sauce.
- Serve immediately and enjoy.
Notes
- For extra flavor, grill the chicken for a slightly smoky taste.
- You can substitute chicken breasts, but thighs remain juicier.
- Top with pickled onions or cucumbers for a tangy crunch.
